!
Sir Hubert reined his heavy charger aside just, in time to evade the heavy lance of the charging warrior in the flowing burnoose. All around him was the clash of sword on shield and the shrill cries of the tribesmen. His own sheild was splin- tered and hrs lance broken during the first charge 'led by King Richard the leader of the army of the Crusades.
Hubert parried a bkfcv fromsthe left and* his counterblow stunned his helmeted opponent. He was grinning for Hubert loved to fight, when he Half turned -to avoM a glaring, bearded chief, but not in time. He felt a ringing blow on his helmet. tried desperately to keep astride his, charger, but the world was dark and he was falling.
He awoke in a strange place, gloomy and silent. He felt weak and his head went around when he tried to sit up. At the movement an old man got up from a pile of skins in the opposite corner. He pushed Hubert back easily, then offered water. Hubert drank thirstily.
"Where am I," the Crusader asked in a rusty voice. The old' one shook his Head' to indicate incomprehension and left the tent. He was back in a moment wftH a bowl that smelled strange to Hubert. The latter didn't argue about the smell. He speared chunks of meat with his knife,, then gulped the rest down: Almost immediately he felt better.
As though waiting for this as a signal, the tent flap was thrown back and a tall, bearded Mussul- man entered. He sighed' for the old' man to leave.
"Are you strong enough to talk?" he asked. He had very little accent. >
Hubert nodded. "Aye, and strong enough not
to answer if I mislike the questions. How came I here?"
The other shrugged. "Your men left you for dead, I thought you might prove useful if only i* a slave. You have the freedom of the camp but you will be watched. I will talk with vou later."
HORDG
Sir Hubert was sore in every limb. The Mussul- man's sword hadn't cut him but his head would ache for days, he knew. He was amazed at the sight before him when he emerged from the tent. They were camped near an oasis but for miles around he could see tents, camels and horses. And thousands upon thousands of Islamic warriors.,
'ft looks as though every able bodied Saracen in the East is here," he thought. "King Richard had better be prepared for them or he'll have his hands full."
Hubert seemed to be wandering aimlessly in the days that followed but he saw everything through trained military eyes. Preparations were being made for a great campaign. Warriors were honing their weapons, checking the equipment they'd ' need in battle. Councils were held in a gaily striped tent witff the pennants of the leaders flying! from the top. Then Sir Hubert spotted a deeply 'tanned' face in^a group near a cookfire. He was ax dark as the others but green eyes glittered over the great beak of a nose. He closed one eye deliberately and went back to chattering fluently in Arabic.
1 4
Hubert sauntered away and sat beneath a date palm. Green Eyes didn't come for an hour, then he led a limping njare. He paused near Hubert to examine the hoof.
L
"Are you English/' he murmured. "Don't look at me.'
it
Hubert looked across the desert. "I'm English. What are you doing with' this outfit?"
"Trying to keep my skin in one piece! 1 haven't had a chance to get away from them! I was a prisoner for three years before I convinced them that I was sincere when I asked to become a Mussulman! But I don't help them any m battle! Listen, forget that. Do you want to get away?"
'Tve got to! Someone has to warn Sir Richard about this assembly! If I can get my hands on a horse, I'll make it!"
The other shook his head gloomily. "I tried it a dozen times when I was. first captured. You
i
\
need to know where the water holes are and get enough food to last. It's a long way across that desert. Two of us might make it. I'll let you know."
Then he was gone, a lean man with green eyes, as dark as the men he rode with. Hubert tried to look downcast when he returned to the tent. Kaid AH Hussein, his captor was waiting, a cynical grin on his face.
"Trying to escape, Sir Crusader? You won't live if you do. It was your last chance too!"
Hubert wheeled in angry alarm. "Why? What
*
do you mean?"
Hussein laughed. "My warriors surround this oasis ! They are as many as the sands of the desert ! How far could you go?" He beckoned to an aide as tall and thick through the shoulders as Hubert himself- "But enough of this. Ben Gala, ask the questions you must. This time the foreigner will answer."
Hussein held his sword ready and Hubert knew he wouldn't hesitate to use it. Ben Galas English was as good as his own. He started by asking for the number of men Richard had. Hubert lied nobly Then he was told to name the important officers and describe their armor Hubert lied happily again. All the time Hussein watched with a cold dispassionate' eye. Suddenly, he thrust Hubert back, eyes glittering, his intention written on his ruthless face.
"Enough lies! Pray if you can, Englishman, your end is near!" He raised his sword high. Hubert leaped at the same time and felt bones give as he connected. Husseih reeled away and Hubert ducked in time to avoid Ben Gala's thrust. He jumped in close, hooked his leg behind the aide's and they went down together. Ben Gala's head hit a rock with a sickening thump.
Both men were motionless. Hubert jumped for the open flap and looked out. No one noticed him. Then, from around the tent came %Green Eyes. He grinned at Hubert. "Got em both, did you? Now you have to run for it! No choice!"
"We won't run. We'll ride in style! You know which horses belong tp Hussein and Ben Gala. Get two of their fleetest, then meet me here! If anyone stops you, tell him Hussein is preparing for the coming battle."
Green eves was back is * few minutes with
two magnificent Arabian Stallions! Hubert yanked
him inside the tent at once. Green Eyes readied
for his belt at the sight of Hubert, face stained
brown, attired in Ben Gala's flowing, colorful
robes. Hubert nodded at Hussein. "Put the Kaid's
burnoose on. If anyone spots us, you handle it! You have the language."
A few minutes later, Hussein and his aide were riding into the desert, with plenty of water and extra rations. But ahead was the desert, behind them a Saracen horde that would cover the desert to get the man who had dishonored their leader.
They conserved the magnificent horses as mile after mile of desert dropped behind. They were headed west but the country was unfamiliar till Sir Hubert spotted a desert peak. He knew where he was then.
"King Richard and the Crusaders* are camped near that peak! Well swing north and find them before daylight!" Scarcely had he finished when they heard the pounding of hoofs and half a dozen riders flowed down the hill to their l^ft. Hubert, armed with the unfamiliar shield and curved saber lunged to meet them, Green Eyes at his side. They knocked the first two to the ground, then whirled at the next pair. Sir Hubert felt a burning shock in his shoulder but hurled his horse at his opponent, reeling in the saddle. Then the two Englishmen grinned at each other.
"Come on," Hubert growled, trying to hide his weakness. "King Richard's camp is over that hill"
An hour later Hubert's wound was dressed and he was eating English cooking once more. His friends had been in to congratulate him and he was alone when the flap was thrown back and a golden haired giant stood there. Beside him was Green Eyes. Hubert tried to get up but Richard waved him back. x
"You served me well, Sir Hubert. We'll trap Hussein's men when they come! You will be rewarded well !"
Hubert squirmed at the praise. "Green Eyes did more than I did* Your Highness! Reward him!"
.Richard stared, then laughed. "Green Eyes is what he calls himsglf, eh? Sir Hubert, your com- panion in exile was Prince Richard, my first cousin and dearest friend!"

Amazing new medicated lotion developed by a doctor works Wonders by clearing up
complexion in one week or less I
l
DON'T let a bad complexion ruin romance, spoil your fun, cause you to be embarrassed, shy or ashamed. If you "suffer from acne, the common external cause of pimples among young people, try this wonderfully effective medicated lotion that was developed by a practicing physician to clear up his own teen ager's complexion after other methods had failed. It has produced astonishing results for many thousands of others- It is GUARANTEED to help you or it -won't cost you a single cent!
Doesn't Show On Your Face
Keraplex is a skin-colored lotion (NOT a greasy salve or ointment!) that is quickly absorbed by the skin and gets right down in the pores where its healing and antiseptic ingre- dients can go to work. After you have applied it, there is no trace left on the surface. In fact, it makes a perfect powder base for girls and a refreshing after shaving lotion for men . . . actually improves the tone of the skin! It is pleasant and easy to use — .leaving your skin soft, clean and fragrant.
Works in SIX Out of SEVEN Coses!
An analysis of RESULTS taken from actual case histories proves that Keraplex is successful in clearing up six of every seven cases of externally caused blackheads and. pimples. It tones up the complexion generally, giving it a healthy, radiant glow.
Try This New Method Without Risking A Penny!
Keraplex is GUARANTEED to clear up your skin troubles or there will be NO COST to you whatsoever. If yours hap- pens to be the ONE extra -stubborn case out of seven which Keraplex cannot help in one short week, it will cost you nothing to have tried it. Keraplex is sent to you with that simple, positive GUARANTEE!
BEFORE
Thi» young mart suffered from a severe case of acne for years and tried all the usual "remedies" without success.
BEFORE
Note more than a dozen blemishes on just one side of this girl's foe* before KERAPLEX was applied. .
AFTER
Same young man after us- ing KERAPLEX twice a day for just one week. Notice the decided improvement- pimples completely gone I
